Normally you wouldn’t think Michigan as a Adventure Travel state, but it is…really. The state is really divided into two separate sections. Lower Michigan, and Upper Michigan or known as the U.P. If we mentioned key words such as “sandstone cliffs“, “blue green lakes“, “sand dunes” and “beaches“. You may think we were crazy. But that is exactly what you get in Upper Michigan.
We put together the top 3 Michigan Travel Adventures for you. By the way, we go to all 3 every year.
1: Isle Royale National Park – Explore a rugged, isolated island where wolves and moose abound, far from the sights and sounds of civilization. Surrounded by Lake Superior, Isle Royale offers unparalleled solitude and adventures for backpackers. Here, amid stunning scenic beauty, you’ll find opportunities for reflection and discovery, and make memories that last a lifetime.
To say this trip is “Epic” is an understatement. Perhaps see a Bull Moose, a Fox. AND, more stars than you have ever seen in your life.
Fly in from Houghton, MI on a Sea Plane to add to your adventure. Land in one of the island lakes to a dock only a short hike to the main lodge. And yes, it’s spectacular!
The island is 9 miles wide, and 45 miles long. Lots of exploring. Take the Ranger III back and complete an adventure of a lifetime.
2. Porcupine Wilderness – Find four seasons of scenery, wilderness adventure and relaxation in the Porcupine Mountains and the communities in Ontonagon County – White Pine, Silver City and Ontonagon.
See hundreds of spectacular waterfalls. Go beach combing for colorful stones and agates along 21 miles of pristine beaches. Paddle your sea kayak over crystal clear waters along Lake Superior’s sculpted shores or canoe the winding Ontonagon River. Ride 21 miles of designated mountain biking trails overlooking Lake Superior and majestic old-growth forests. Hike, snowshoe and cross-country ski miles of scenic trails winding through hemlock, maple, basswood and birch—in total, you’ll find 87 miles of trail systems running throughout the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness.
3. Pictured Rock National Seashore -Multicolored sandstone cliffs, sand dunes, beaches, waterfalls, inland lakes, streams, forests and wildlife comprise this scenic area on Lake Superior. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stands out among the rest as having a reputation for being one of the most picturesque parks in the United States.
Pictured Rocks stretches along the Michigan coast from Grand Marais to Munising and features spectacular scenery, including 15 miles of multicolored sandstone cliffs rising 200 feet above Lake Superior. The splash of color is caused by minerals: red and orange from copper, green and blue from iron, white from lime, and black from manganese. Waves, wind, rain, and ice have eroded these cliffs into arches, columns, promontories, and thunder caves. So if you’re looking for an adventure? Michigan just maybe a destination you don’t want to miss.
